The Lynchburg Airshow is right around the corner and tickets are now available. This is the first airshow at Lynchburg Regional (KLYH -- our home base) in 28 years. And to help us celebrate the Blue Angels are coming. We will also have the Flying Circus, the Army's Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team (Black Daggers), a balloon team, glider demo, static displays, and more.
Flying Circus and Blue Angels -- Bracketing Aviation HistoryGetting both the Blue Angels and the Flying Circus into one airshow is like book-ending the beginning and present in airshow demonstrations. The Flying Circus brings us back to aviation's barnstorming days with bi-planes, radial engines, and wing-walking -- the "Golden Age of Aviation." To complete you trip into yesteryear we'll have a vintage car display. Then fast-forward 80 years and you have the power and majesty of the Blue Angels, the Navy's premier demonstration team. The Blue Angels have been wowing audiences since 1946 when they were flying the Grumman F8F Bearcat. Now flying the Navy's advanced F/A-18 Hornet. Bring your earplugs because these babies are loud.
The Black Daggers are the official U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team. Their mission is to perform live aerial demonstrations in support of Army Special Operations community relations and recruiting. Comprised of volunteers from throughout Army Special Operations the Black Daggers have diverse backgrounds and are skilled in various military specialties including Special Forces, Rangers, civil affairs, psychological operations and signal and support. The team represents the professionalism and dedication of special operations forces.
Lynchburg is home to a diverse aviation community that ranges from Light Sport (trike, powered-parachute, and fixed-wing) to balloon; general aviation training (fixed-wing and helicopter); charter operations; emergency, military, and police helicopter; and commercial. In a typical day at Lynchburg you can see training operations that include trikes, Cessnas, and helicopters; commercial and charter aircraft, military Blackhawks and Apaches, a hot-air balloon or two, and an Air Force VIP plane from Andrews AFB practicing touch & goes. Many of these aircraft will be on static display as we celebrate Lynchburg's long history of aviation support.
